It’s been a tragic start to the summer in Alicante province, where one person has died for each day of the month so far. This awful death toll was added to on Friday June 7 when two swimmers, including a British holidaymaker, were overcome by the waves.
La Roqueta beach on the Orihuela Costa claimed the life of the 52-year-old UK holidaymaker when he rushed into the sea to save two children, aged six and seven, who had run into difficulty in the strong currents. Another beachgoer, a Polish man aged 46, also swam to their aid, and he too died.
Two others, a man and woman in their 20s, were taken to hospital with breathing difficulties after trying to help in the rescue mission, but their conditions are not believed to be life-threatening. The two children were eventually pulled to safety.
A Guardia Civil officer confirmed the shocking incident: “Two people lost their lives. One was British and the other was Polish.
“They were both trying to help two young children who were in difficulties in the sea.
“The sea conditions were pretty bad.”
But that was only the beginning of a deadly weekend on the Guardamar del Segura beach. On Saturday June 8, a 77-year-old man died in the surf.
Sadly, as the summer season hasn’t kicked in yet, the lifeguard services haven’t been put in place in Guardamar.
Guardamar del Segura mayor Jose Luis Saez said: “Three deaths from drowning in the last 24 hours at Guardamar’s beaches.
“The prevailing sea conditions are very dangerous, with strong dragging currents making bathing unadvisable.”
