The Guardia Civil dismantles a criminal group made up of seven young people, responsible for 15 robberies in retail premises in Lorca and Mazarrón
The Guardia Civil of the Region of Murcia carried out ‘Operation Vapper’, an investigation aimed at solving numerous robberies in businesses in the municipalities of Lorca and Mazarrón, which has culminated in the dismantling of a criminal group, formed of seven young people, one of them a minor, whom are allegedly the perpetrators of 15 crimes of robbery with force.
The investigation began in August of last year, at which time there was a notable increase in robberies from businesses in the municipalities of Mazarrón and Lorca, generating public concern.
The robberies were committed at dawn on commercial establishments located in the Lorca districts of La Escucha, Almendricos, La Estación, La Hoya and Ramonete, as well as in the Camposol urbanisation and in the Cañada Gallego district of the municipality from Mazarrón.
The Guardia Civil collected the necessary evidence from each crime scene, as well as the information provided by the complainants, which revealed that a common pattern existed.
The assaults were committed at dawn with the same precise modus operandi which led to the suspicion that the culprits had a wide knowledge of the area, that they were organised and that before committing the robberies carried out prior surveillance on their targets.
It was at this time the Guardia Civil initiated ‘Operation Vapper' with the collaboration of Lorca Local Police.
After months of ongoing investigations, which included the use of operational surveillance devices and the study and comparison of the information obtained, the Guardia Civil has carried out raids on the addresses of the alleged perpetrators who all resided in the Águilas area.
‘Operation Vapper’ culminated in the identification of seven young people, five of whom have been arrested with two others under investigation, all of them as the alleged offenders in at least fifteen crimes of robbery with force in commercial premises plus being members of a criminal group.
According to the investigation, those now detained travelled at dawn from the neighbouring municipality of Águilas, where they resided, to commercial premises in Lorca and Mazarrón.
Those detained and under investigation, which includes one minor and the rest aged between 19 and 22 years, were of Spanish and Moroccan nationalities, have been remanded to the Court of First Instance and Instruction number 2 in Lorca (Murcia) and to the Office for the Prosecution of Minors.
