Passenger flying Murcia-Manchester caught smuggling 25kg of tobacco
The authorities detained an individual carrying a huge quantity of rolling tobacco and cigarettes
Murcia’s Guardia Civil carried out an operation recently at the Region of Murcia International Airport, snagging a passenger who was illegally smuggling tobacco products from Spain to the UK.
The border services, alongside the Civil Guard, caught the individual while carrying out security control on a flight to Manchester. The individual was carrying the tobacco, without the Spanish tax seal, in his hand luggage.
The Civil Guard immediately seized the tobacco, which weighed a total of 25.650 kilograms, and began a series of checks to determine its origin, in order to confirm the violation of the smuggling regulations.
Shortly afterwards, tax specialists confirmed that the seized tobacco was valued at 8,160 euros. The tobacco had been smuggled into Spain from Andorra and was destined for sale in the United Kingdom.
Once they had all the evidence they needed, the airport police reported the passenger to the customs office.
The passenger has been charged with a serious infringement related to tobacco products, which carries a fine of between 150 and 250 per cent of the value of the amount seized, which ranges from 12,240 to 20,400 euros.
UK government guidelines state that an individual can return to the UK from a foreign country with no more than “200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco* (including shisha tobacco) or 200 sticks of tobacco for heating. You can combine these allowances, provided that you do not exceed your total tobacco allowance.”
